6:04 PM MIXTAPE #4 Curated By Micah Nelson (Particle Kid)
Brian eno: this record never fails to calm me down and comfort my mind. If yer having a difficult head trip, put this on immediately.
Arthur Russel: underrated genius. He burns the box with every song and reminds us the rules are lame.
Sonic youth: I could really have put any sonic youth song here, but I thought given our current scenario “disconnection notice” was apt.
Sunny war: got to play on this song and lots of other sunny war classics. I miss you sunny. We will make our disco record when this is over!!
The mills brothers: entirely a capella. Might be one guitar but otherwise they are making every one of these sounds with their faces. Freak legends.
Tinariwen: got to play on this song. Probably the best band in the world.
Black midi: I get a bit depressed every time I see or hear this band because I realize I’ll never be as good or as cool as them. Fuck you black midi.
Michael Hurley: legendary psych folk pioneer from Portland. Got to meet him before a show in Brooklyn, but the opener played late and I had to leave before michael’s set because I had my own gig to get to. It was sad, but glad I got to chat with him for a second . His first album “first songs” is worth visiting. I covered his “Captain Kidd” on the Particle Kid / John Doe split 12” “Kiddoe” .
R. Stevie Moore: 4 track wizard freak. Another underrated diy lofi genius. This song pops in my head almost every time I look at the news.
Broadcast: this band is the sound of lsd. Timeless. Uncanny. Perfect temporary blissful psychosis. Childlike and masterful. I could have picked any song. This one to me perfectly reflects a sort of feeling of accepting madness and nostalgically waving yer own sanity goodbye.
Hoyt Axton: it’s amazing Hoyt Axton isn’t super famous given how much he’s contributed to culture whether it’s songwriting, acting, singing , playing guitar etc. his mother May Axton is the AX in STAX records. He wrote “pusher man” for steppenwolf. He fucking wrote “Jeremiah was a bullfrog” for three dog night. He was in the movie Gremlins! He wrote a zillion classic songs and had an excellent deep singing voice. Know him. Love him.
Boredoms: Sean Lennon turned me on to this band when we were on tour together with Flaming lips. I’d sorta known about them vaguely and I’d heard some of them here and there but never really sat and dove into a whole record properly until Sean insisted. Thanks Sean!
