www.thirdmanmastering.com

Bill Skibbe is Third Man Records mastering engineer. How he got there was a “series of slipping on banana peels” from helping build Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studio, to starting an electronics company, Skibbe Electronics, to building and running his own studio, Key Club Recording where he recorded three records with “The Kills”. This led to The Kills lead singer Allison Mosshart suggesting that Bill track “Sea of Cowards” with Jack White and the rest of The Dead Weather at Third Man Record’s in Nashville in 2008. Bill was then asked by Jack White to lead Third Man Mastering in their new Detroit studio. In our interview, we cover how he got to this spot, many details of the mastering process, the current state of vinyl records, tracking and working with Jack White on his last three albums and Bill gives advice to bands ready to take the next step.
